Therapy - University Hospital Aachen - Marfan disease and aortic aneurysms (polish version)


One of the main medical problems in patients who suffer from Marfan disease concerns aortic aneurysms, which can occur in the thoracic and abdominal aorta and peripheral arteries. Because of the fragile aortic wall, aortic aneurysms in Marfan patients have a higher tendency to rupture, causing life-threatening situations. The main goal of treatment is to prevent rupture and at present two strategies can be followed: endovascular or open surgical therapy.

In the University Hospital Aachen we use both modalities in patients with aortic aneurysms. However, in patients with Marfan disease we recommend open surgery because endovascular therapy has not proven its long-term benefit yet. Furthermore, the interaction between an endograft and a fragile aorta can cause unexpected complications like rupture, fistula and infection. We can justify this surgical recommendation because we have an extensive experience with open surgery in (young) patients with Marfan disease. All operations are performed with the heart-lung machine to protect the vital organs during the procedure and with neuro-monitoring techniques to prevent paraplegia.
